Middle School English Language Development (ELD)/ESL Teacher

Job Description

Independence Charter School – Center City (ICS- CC) is a K-8 Philadelphia citywide admission charter focused on academic excellence, second language acquisition and developing global citizens. ICS is now recruiting culturally proficient educators to join the 2023-2024 staff.  This is a full-time teaching position. Work is performed under the supervision of the principal.

JOB SUMMARY:

To plan, organize and implement a culturally responsive instructional program for English Learners (EL) that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

Duties and Responsibilities

ELD Teaching

 

• Provide ELD push in and/or pull out instruction to students in grades 4th through 8^th
• Work with classroom teachers to support differentiated instruction to meet the needs of EL students.
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including whole group (co-teaching)/ small-group or individual learning.
• Participate in department, school and parent meetings.
• Regularly check in with students and teachers about the progress of EL Students.
• Monitor the progress and grades of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies and program delivery.
• Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning within a culturally responsive approach to teaching and learning.
• Manage student behavior by creating an environment of belonging and positive relationships and by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures within a structured environment.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development, including the implementation of WIDA screeners and ACCESS testing
• Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs.
• Other duties as assigned

• A/B.S degree in teaching from an accredited college or university.
• Pennsylvania State certification as ESL Program Specialist (required)
• Demonstrated cultural responsiveness and skill in encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to feel a sense of belonging and creating a safe space where they feel respected, heard, and challenged.
• Demonstrated understanding, appreciation and compassion for students who learn differently
• Commitment to ICS values of equity, courage, community, and growth
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
• Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.

 

 

Physical Requirements

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
