Job Description

Green Woods Charter School (GWCS) provides children in grades K through 8 with the opportunity to be active, knowledgeable, and conscientious young investigators by fostering a keen understanding of the interrelatedness and interdependence of our local and global existence; creating active young stewards of the natural world.  GWCS serves children primarily in the Roxborough catchment area of Philadelphia.

Duties and Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Middle School Environmental Science Teacher and Service Project Coordinator role will be a position with shared responsibilities in science education.  The role will serve as a:

 

  • Teacher (70%) – creating and administering classroom programs that are conducive to student learning and development. The Teacher uses a variety of classroom techniques for learning and facilitates the implementation of all middle school service projects, including both on campus and off campus projects.
  • Service Project Coordinator (30%) – working to advance GWCS’ mission to create young stewards of the natural work, through his/her focus on school-wide STEM programs to support GWCS’ high academic expectations. The Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination and delivery of EcoSchools service projects.

 

The ideal candidate is flexible and committed to a continuous process for professional growth and student learning.  The role will report to the Director of Instructional Technology.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promote high expectations, demonstrates a caring attitude, and establishes an environment that supports social, emotional, and academic development in students
  • Supervise students within the classroom and other assigned areas
  • Coordinate the planning and ensure all middle school students participate in a service project that is connected to an EcoSchools pathway
  • Develop lesson plans and delivers group and individual student instruction connected to EcoSchools pathways and science service projects
  • Collaborate with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues
  • Respond to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress
  • Frequently communicate with parents and caregivers about their child’s progress by phone, email, in conferences, newsletters, and through report cards. Be available for individual meetings when needed
  • Use positive and productive techniques for improving student behavior
  • Assist students in establishing high standards of academic success
  • Serve as liaison between the school and home
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • BA or BS in Elementary Education or Science or a related field
  • Teacher certification – highly preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated expertise in science or science related field
  • Experience creating and implementing science-based programs

 

Physical Requirements:

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as:

  • Functioning in classroom space – walking, sitting, standing, reaching
  • Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse and typing
  • Must be able to stand for up to two hours instructing a classroom of learners
  • Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on a frequent basis
