Job Description

The Music Department of Germantown Friends School is seeking an experienced teaching musician to provide instruction in music, primarily in our middle school program. Students at Germantown Friends School have required instruction in general music as well as opportunities to elect into choir, orchestra, concert band, and ensembles and musical theatre. We seek an experienced, innovative educator who can enact our general music program and also teach in our vocal and/or instrumental elective program. Successful candidates will have a relevant degree in performance or pedagogy, a broad knowledge of the musical literature, and a demonstrated desire to develop young musicians. A master’s degree is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

The ideal Candidate:

  • has a strong background in music and in instructing students in grades 6-12.
  • can be a creative, thoughtful collaborator with Music Department colleagues in the continual search for innovative ways to educate the whole child.
  • can support our general music and music theory programs and contribute to one or more aspects of our elective program.
  • is a fluent user of musical instructional technology.
  • is able to participate in ways to support the GFS commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • has an ability to differentiate instruction and cultivate student growth.
  • will work to create and fully support practices of an equitable classroom.
  • has lead teaching experience.



  • Manage a full teaching load, including teaching in mini-courses or January Term courses.
  • Advise a group of 8-10 students.
  • Participate in the life of the school, including required meetings and duties.
  • Write timely reports.
  • Support the school mission and strategic initiatives.
