Job Description
This position instructs children in Lower and Middle School. The ideal candidate will have a strong background teaching physical education and health to elementary- and middle school-aged students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Demonstrates a joy for learning and teaching.
- Prepares a daily, well-planned environment with appropriate, meaningful, activities that stimulate children’s involvement and learning.
- Implements the current curriculum which promotes grade-level standards in physical education.
- Establishes and implements expectations for student safety and conduct; and procedures and routines, consistent with School policies.
- Instructs students on the basic techniques needed to play team sports and other recreational activities.
- Models and teaches the importance of living a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity.
- Evaluates student performance and provides feedback aimed at empowering students to improve their performance.
- Collaborates and coordinates with the teaching team to ensure consistency within the program.
- Maintains a safe and engaging learning environment.
- Participates in and contributes to an adult learning community by engaging in meetings, discussions, and professional development.
- Completes administrative tasks and coverage duties as assigned (student supervision, attendance, reporting, documenting curriculum, etc.)
- Coaches in either the Middle or the Upper School.
- Participates in recommended in-service and seeks out opportunities for professional growth.
- Other Duties as assigned by PE Department Chair, Athletic Director and/or Head of Lower School.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s Degree preferred.
- Three to five years of teaching experience at the lower school level preferred.
- Experience teaching physical education, preferably in an independent school setting.
- Have a deep understanding of the physical development of children.
- Strong interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and other adults.
- Strong communication skills, including experience in writing student comments and other school-related documents.
- Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members with a continuous focus on healthy relationship building.
- Demonstrated deep understanding of cultural competency skills and enthusiasm for issues of diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
- Turn, bend, reach, and climb.
- This position works in a variety of settings including classrooms and outdoors.
